dumb adopt tutorial by sockjuice dumb adopt tutorial by sockjuice
edit : this tutorial has now been redone! Hopefully you will find this more helpful now!

And look at how far we've come.
A redo of my original adoptable tutorial, now hopefully a little clearer and prettier LOL

I want to thank all of my watchers, the ones from the very beginning to my very newest. Your support means the world to me.

I want to thank my friends, for encouraging me and helping me out, and I want to thank my inspirations, for helping me to keep on designing.

Most of all, I want to thank two people who fit all three categories.
=LinoleumItalics | *Burscutum

DBT until the end of time ♥
If it weren't for you guys, I would never have started making adoptables. And if it weren't for adoptables, I would never have met you. I'm so happy that both of those things ended up happening.

Anyway, on a less personal note :

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I'm not a great designer, artist or business person but I HAVE been a part of the adopt community and have sold adopts for a long time.

That's all for now, folks ★

p.s i suggest you check out is this guide to stolen adoptables in order to avoid being scammed :

Thank you for this tutorial! <3

Do you happen to know how to safely set up a Paypal account for adopts? Is there anything that I need to be aware of? (I've read a bunch of tutorials so far, but they mainly target buyers instead of sellers, so I just want to be certain.)

thanks ;w;

Sorry if I'm bothering but I'm really new selling adoptables and I have some questions:
1-I need to do something to gets the points when I sell an adoptable? like activating something on my profile or something?
2-Is okay if I put different kinds of adoptables together? for example: putting normal humans, dogs, cats and anthros in the same page.
3-Can anyone tell me how much points I can ask using this coloring style sta.sh/02akhzqpzto

(I have yet to start adoptables, but I hope my opinion will help!)
1- There's a widget you can add onto your profile (the donation pool) so people can send in points. There's a lot of tutorials on how to do it, if you don't know.
2- I recommend putting one species with it's species. If you want to make a cat adoptable and a dog adoptable, put them on two separate pages.
3- You can ask for a good bit! If you used a base, maybe 25-30 ... if you made your own base, possibly 50? I personally think 40 is really fair for that, but I don't know exactly how much work went into it.

Good luck!

This is a amazing tutorial but I do NOT think that the -draw to adopt- rule is ridiculous.
Personally I actually think that it's really annoying when someone adopt a creature and never use it, I mean, most of us who make adopts put alot of time creating it and I suppose that you do that to.
But this is just my opinion though.
I recently started this account as a adopt account so you won't see much if you visit my gallery to give me a "punch-reply"(yes I use that term, and I think that no one else uses it)

The ridiculous part of it thigh is that the person paid for the design. If you buy something, you should own it fully, without the creator threatening to reclaim. Those sorts of rules turn off a lot of buyers

True.
I don't really threaten to take it back (but I've seen those that do) but I do have it as an "ish-rule"
I've always enjoyed watching others deviations that are based of my artwork or adopts that they bought from me.
But, this is just my opinion.

Either! Just be sure to keep the presentation quality high with the traditional ones, so people can see the designs well

If you click on someone's username it will take you to their page p. On the top right hand corner there should be a box that says "give" you click on that and it will give you an option of points, llama, or cake badge. You then type in the amount of points and send them.
Alternatively you can donate in donation box (if they have one on their page) in a similar way. To get points they have to give them

oh my gosh this has helped me so much!! Thanks a ton!! I have been recently considering starting to make adopts, so thi was a lsaver, since I knew NOTHING X'DD

Anyway, I just have a question, and sorry if you already answered this! ; - ;
So let's just say I'm selling adopts and someone purchases one. What do they get? Do I send them a link to a sta.sh file, or do I send them a digital copy of their adopt? Should I watermark it? Or do they just get the rights to use the design, but I don't actually send them anything? Or maybe it depends on the artist?

anyhoo thanks again for creating this, it's super helpful :D

If i was you i would just put down a signature at the bottom. So they can see the design clearly and no what colors to use ect. You sould water mark the one that everyone sees. Like if you bought an adoptable from me i would send yu the original with out the water mark but with the artist signature.

This was a good read. I've been needing a bit of help since my adopts don't sell very well.
The question for me is; is it better to have a separate, adoptable account for adopts? Would they have a better chance of selling on an account focused solely on adopts and adopt customs versus a main account where all the artist's art goes?

actually i finjd fair the rule of taking it back if you dont use it, most of all in the DARPG community, who's adoptables MUST be used for sure.
plus.. well. why do you buy if you dont use it?

I think it's unfair because if you pay for something, it shouldn't really be the creator's business what you do with it after ^^ ;;
For example, if you buy a loaf of bread, whether or not you eat it or throw it away is not the baker's business, if they took it back just because you didn't eat it, even though you'd paid, that'd be ridiculous, right? xD

yeah,that would, but you make an adopt to make people USE it and it's unfair to take it and give him dust .-. i found unfair also the fact you odnt eat the bread if you buy it so xD

I think it's different for everyone ^^ I don't mind if people don't use adopts they buy from me, but I can see that people wouldn't like it with the adopts they make.

yeah, i am one of those people xD for exemple, i am in the darpg since a little. in it, you adopt dogs, you make them role play and such :) so you buy a pup to make him join competitions like it is a real dog and such, and since i want a dog and cant have it it hurts me to see dogs unused even if they are not real xD

Oh, I haven't heard of things like that : O It sounds interesting ^^ So, it's like really buying a character/pet, instead of a design?

:iconilda28399:
Ilda28399 Featured By Owner May 8, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
yeah :3 well, you buy a pup from a litter or an import. they have a specific breed most of time you can't change and it must respect the breed standards. it's all natural color and some are damn cute and stuff :D i find them much more interesting comparated to osme shiny ones. You can get friends asking forr breeding, there are contests with the different types of competitions for dogs and such :D so yeah, you buy a pet and you role-play ni the groups doing these things ^_^
